About Ballooning

Baskets

basket Baskets used in ballooning come in a variety of sizes. A 4 person basket might have dimensions of approx. 1.1 metre x 1.5 metre, while baskets of approx. 1.75 metre x 3.5 metre would be needed for carrying up to 17 passengers. The larger baskets are usually compartmentalized to prevent the passengers from moving around during the flight, and altering the weight distribution. The compartments also provide protection, support and handholds for the passengers, especially when landing. The photograph shows a 9 person basket.

What all baskets have in common is that they are made of wicker i.e. woven cane or willow. This feature has remained unchanged since the earliest days of ballooning (circa. 1783). Many other materials (including modern man made materials) have been tested, however, none have been found that are better at absorbing the stress/deformation of repeated impacts (i.e. landings), immediately springing back into shape.

The weight of the basket (and its occupants) is carried by stainless steel wires which pass underneath the basket, protected by wooden runners. These wires attach to the burner frame and envelope by means of carabiners.
